A static code is a picture of your URL. Scanning it reads the characters straight off the pattern and opens them. Nothing is looked up, so there is no server that can go away and no account that can lapse. The pattern will still resolve to the same text in twenty years.
That is a real guarantee, and it is narrower than it sounds. The code is permanent. Whether it still works depends on the URL inside it, and that is not ours to promise.
The domain has to stay registered.
This is the one that actually happens. A lapsed renewal kills every printed code pointing at that domain, and the codes are usually the last thing anyone thinks about.
The page has to stay at that address.
A site redesign that changes URL structure will break a printed code as thoroughly as deleting the page, unless someone sets up redirects for the old paths and keeps them.
Point it somewhere you control.
A code aimed at your own domain survives as long as you keep paying for the domain. A code aimed at a third-party page survives only as long as that company keeps the URL alive.
Avoid a shortener in the middle.
Encoding a shortened link puts someone else's service between the printed code and your page. That is a dynamic code with extra steps, and it re-introduces exactly the dependency you were trying to avoid.
Most tools default to giving you a dynamic code, because a dynamic code is a subscription. It scans to their short link, which redirects to your page. While the account is current, that is a genuinely useful feature: you can change the destination after printing, and count the scans.
When the trial ends or a card fails, the redirect stops. The printed code is undamaged and completely useless, and no amount of reprinting the same file fixes it, because the file points at a link that no longer resolves. This is how the tier is designed to work across the industry rather than a malfunction, which is why it is worth knowing about before the print run and not after it.
So: if the destination will never change, use a static code and own it outright. If it might change, a dynamic code is genuinely the right tool, and you should choose it deliberately and know the subscription is load-bearing.
