Static QR codes here are built entirely in your browser. Once this page has loaded, generating and downloading needs no connection and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Some codes also work with no network when they are scanned. The two are different, and both are below.
The generator runs in your browser. Make a QR code.
The code is drawn by JavaScript running on your device. Nothing you type is transmitted while you type it, and the download is produced by the page rather than fetched from a server. On a plane, on a locked-down network, or with the Wi-Fi switched off, the generator keeps working.
The limit is that the page has to reach you once. There is no service worker and no installable app, so if you load this page for the first time with no connection, you get nothing. If you know you will be offline, open it before you go and leave the tab open. That is the whole trick.
This is also the reason the privacy claim holds. It is not a promise about our data retention, it is a description of where the work happens. Nothing reaches our servers because nothing is sent. You can watch that yourself in the Network tab of your browser developer tools while you type.
This is usually the real question, and it depends entirely on the payload. Some codes carry everything the phone needs. Others carry only an address, and an address is useless without a network.
Wi-Fi codes work offline, by definition.
The network name and password are in the pattern. The phone reads them and joins. This is the one people actually need, because the whole point is that the guest has no connection yet.
Contact cards work offline.
A vCard carries the name, phone number and email in the code itself. The phone saves the contact with no lookup.
Plain text works offline.
A note, a serial number, a door code. It appears on screen and nothing is fetched.
URL codes do not.
The address is in the pattern, so the phone knows exactly where to go and cannot get there. Nothing about the code is broken and nothing loads.
Dynamic codes definitely do not.
A dynamic code has to reach our servers to resolve the redirect before it can even attempt the destination. If the code needs to survive a dead signal, use a static one.
The practical version: if you are printing a code for somewhere with poor reception, a basement bar, a rural venue, an underground car park, put the information in the code rather than a link to it.
